Surf Camp Counselors

David Turin of Surf Camp David Turin

David founded Surf Camp in 2002 and has been surfing for 20 years. He prefers to longboard but also likes shortboarding when conditions prevail. David learned to surf in Maine at Higgins Beach (just down the road!) and now has experience surfing all over the world, including Fiji, Costa Rica, and South Africa. In addition to teaching his own 4 children to surf, David has taught surfing privatley for 10 years and holds certifications in Life Saving, CPR, and First Aid. David has been a windsurfing teacher, a scuba diving guide, and a licensed sea captain as well as a restaurant owner and chef for 25 years.

Dustin Turin of Surf Camp Dustin Turin

Dustin grew up surfing and has spent time surfing around the world in Indonesia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, South Africa, and across North America. Dustin's favorite break (aside from Scarborough Beach!) is "J-Bay" in South Africa -- one of the world's most perfect right-handers, made famous in Bruce Brown's Endless Summer films. Dustin also works as a freelance photographer (see the photo section) and is completing a PhD in Political Science from Northeastern University. Dustin has been teaching at camp since it was first opened in 2002 and is a certified lifeguard with additional certifications in CPR and First-Aid.

Bill Stone of Surf Camp Bill Stone

Bill has been surfing for 18 years, riding both a longboard and a shortboard. Bill surfs in all conditions, including the brutal Maine winter, and has experience throughout New England, California, and multiple visits to Costa Rica. During the off-season, Bill is a teacher at Scarborough High School. Bill swam competitively at University of Maine, and is a certified Lifeguard with additional certifications in CPR and First-Aid. This will be Bill’s 9th year with Surf Camp.

Emily Heath of Surf Camp Emily Heath

Emily has been surfing for 14 years and has one thing to say: "Who says girls can't surf!" Emily was an involved athlete playing soccer, basketball and lacrosse in High School, and recently graduated from Endicott College with a degree in Pyhiscal Education. In the off-season, Emily trades her surfboard for skis working in Utah's mountains. This will be her 8th year teaching at Surf Camp. Emily is a certified Lifeguard and holds additional certifications in CPR and First-Aid.

Sawyer Theriault of Surf Camp Sawyer Theriault

Sawyer has been surfing for 13 years with experience up and down the coast of Maine, California, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Puerto Rico. Sawyer studied English and Environmental Conservation at the University of New Hampshire and is pursuing an off-season career in Environmental Education. Sawyer can often be found jamming out on his acoustic guitar under the summer stars; he'll show you just how to put the soul-surfer style into the waves at Scarborough Beach. Sawyer isn't just a big softie though: he claims to have "destroyed" fellow surf instructor Bill Stone in competitions of ultimate frisbee, kick ball, home-run derby, ping-pong, and even Halo on the rainy days. This will be Sawyer's 7th summer with Surf Camp; he is a certified Lifeguard and hold additional certifications in CPR and First-Aid.

Owen Pearson of Surf Camp Dave Kesel

Dave has been working with us for 8 years, and when he's not teaching surfing he spends the winter teaching ski lessons at Saddleback. Dave has this to say about camp: "I think a lot of good things happen at Surf Camp. One is the picture to the right that Dustin took. That's my favorite picture of myself surfing. I lost my hat that day, and almost two weeks later Bill went down the beach and found it. That's another reason I like Scarborough Beach: it just keeps giving us nice things! Traveling to places with warm water to surf is great, but in the end I prefer Maine's cold water. My biggest dilemma in life is pretty simple: I don't know if I like surfing or eating chocolate pudding better. All I know is that when I get really good at surfing, I'm going to eat chocolate pudding while I'm surfing."

Owen Pearson of Surf Camp Chris Eldridge

Chris has been surfing for 10 years. He learned right here at Scarborough Beach and after college moved to northern Chile where he enjoyed the endless sunshine and undeveloped coast for a few years. Chris has experience surfing along the coast of South America, Panama, Costa Rica, California, Baja Mexico, and Israel. When he's not surfing, Chris enjoys reading, biking, playing volleyball, and making 7+ ingredient sandwiches. Chris is also a teacher at Scarborough High School. Chris is a certified Lifeguard and holds additional certifications in CPR and First-Aid.
